A Night at the Temple, Wrapped in Sea Breeze and Insects’ Song

Along National Route 55, on the road toward Muroto, lies the “Toyo-Daishi (Meitoku-ji) Tsuyado”, quietly situated within the grounds of a temple connected to Kobo Daishi. This tatami-floored tsuyado offers free lodging, but as there is only one room, it is customary to greet the caretaker upon arrival. There is no Wi-Fi or laundry here, yet the silence that blends with the clear stream in front of the temple and the pause in your journey offer “time to savor the wind and the presence around you.” Once known as the place of “None no Hirune” (“Nap in None”), it rests between the sea breeze and the mountains, gently settling the pilgrim’s heart and accompanying you for a quietly restorative night.
