Guests often describe the ryokan as having an “old-fashioned atmosphere that feels relaxing” and praise the “homely, personalized hospitality” provided by the owners. While some parts of the building show their age, reviews consistently note that the facilities are “very clean and well-maintained” and offer “a simple yet comfortable stay.” The location receives high marks for being “close to the station and convenient for both sightseeing and business trips.” Meals are also well-regarded, with several guests calling them “delicious and homey,” appreciating the “handmade, heartfelt dishes.” Overall, Ryokan Kawakume is celebrated for its warmth, cleanliness, and ease, making it a favorite among walking pilgrims and casual travelers alike.
When I called to make a reservation for a date in December 2025, I was told that they no longer serve breakfast. It seems you can still stay there with a room-only plan, but I decided not to book.
