A Retro-Style Inn with Showa-Era Warmth by JR Doi Station
Just a 5-minute walk from Iyo-Doi Station, nestled in a quiet residential area, Matsuya Ryokan offers a cozy stay that warmly supports walking pilgrims. With only 12 rooms, the inn provides an intimate, homey atmosphere, while its free parking for up to 20 cars also makes it convenient for those traveling by car. Guests often appreciate the thoughtful touches, like the hostess sharing tips about the next day’s pilgrimage route during dinner, or relaxing in the shared bath before setting off again. While modern facilities are limited, the nostalgic charm and comforting sense of slower time flow make it a soothing stop along the way.

Guests praise the “homey and relaxing atmosphere” and the “warm, traditional hospitality,” with many saying they felt truly welcomed. The meals are highly rated, described as “delicious and plentiful” and “prepared with local ingredients,” making dining here a memorable part of the stay. Although the building and amenities are simple, many reviews highlight that “everything is kept clean and tidy,” ensuring a comfortable experience. Overall, the inn is beloved for its intimate atmosphere, friendly service, and satisfying meals.
I stayed here on a walking pilgrimage. I arrived at 5pm. They immediately showed me where to do my laundry and take a bath, and at dinner time the landlady gave me a lecture on the trail for the next day, which was very helpful. The facility itself is old, but I was able to rest comfortably. It’s a nice inn.
