A Pilgrim’s Home Away from Home
Nestled quietly in Anan City, Tokushima, Sazanka (山茶花) is a heartwarming guesthouse that feels like a return to one’s hometown. Just beside the 22nd sacred temple Byōdō-ji, this cozy minshuku offers a comforting atmosphere where the breath of the local community blends with the tranquil path of the pilgrimage. Renovated rooms are spotless and the facilities—especially the bath and toilet—are known for their comfort. The standout feature is the osettai (hospitality) experience: small plates of seasonal fish, handmade desserts, warm rice, and even rice balls and sweets for the next day’s journey—all generously prepared with love. Laundry and drying machines are free to use, and every detail reflects the innkeeper’s thoughtful care. The landlady’s warm smile and heartfelt service make guests feel like they’ve returned home—a gentle resting place on the long pilgrimage road.

The bath is large, and the tatami mats and futons are beautiful.
The food was home cooked, plentiful and delicious. There are ramen, sweets, steamed buns, and fruits for entertainment, and I am humbled by the generosity of the proprietress.
