A hidden pilgrim’s inn where the hearth of an old house warms the heart
Tucked halfway down the western approach to Shoryū-ji Temple, “Onkosha” is a renovated traditional Japanese home that offers quiet comfort to walking pilgrims. In summer, mosquito nets; in winter, a sunken hearth—nostalgic seasonal experiences leave lasting impressions. It offers three Japanese-style rooms and only accepts guests without meals, though you’ll find a kitchen, refrigerator, laundry, dryer, and Wi‑Fi for practical convenience. The cash-only policy adds to its simplicity and reliability. Many travelers comment on the warm hospitality of the owner, sharing stories like “they served me toast and coffee in the morning” or “I felt healed by the clean facilities and welcoming smile.” Onkosha gently receives the end of your walking day with care and quiet warmth.

Many guests appreciated the nostalgic setting, saying, “The toast and coffee in the morning were a big help,” and “I enjoyed a peaceful stay in this tastefully renovated old house.” Others noted the owner’s kindness: “Their warm conversation really lifted my spirits,” and “I could feel their heartfelt hospitality.” Travelers also found the location reassuring: “It’s close to Shoryū-ji’s west path, and the sign gave me peace of mind.” While the facilities retain a rustic charm, that very ambiance—with human warmth—seems to attract many pilgrims.
It’s a room without meals, but for breakfast, we serve toast sandwiches, vegetable juice, soup, and coffee. For dinner, I had tofu and salad.
★★★★★ (5 out of 5 stars)
It’s only been 5 years and the water area is new and very beautiful.
The owner is friendly and fun.
Since we are renovating an old private house, there is only a fusuma partition from the next room, but there is only one room on the second floor.
