A legendary pilgrim’s inn offering peace of mind just before Unpenji

Nestled along a prominent route leading to Unpenji, Minshuku Okada is truly a sanctuary for walking pilgrims. The inn is a traditional wooden structure with seven rooms, featuring amenities tailored to long-distance travelers, such as a washing machine, paid dryer, and yukata provided in each room. During dinner, the lively host shares detailed directions beyond Unpenji, offers maps, and even hands out rice balls—hallmarks of a “legendary inn” on the pilgrimage path. The sunlight filtering through the tatami-floored Japanese rooms and the quietude of the riverside setting evoke the comforting feeling of returning to one’s old family home. The gentle, attentive hospitality provides a quiet space to regain strength for the next day’s journey.

Stayed on a walking pilgrimage. This inn is essential for approaching Unpen-ji. It was a great memory to meet the legendary father who is also a living encyclopedia of the history of the pilgrimage.

It is located at the foot of climbing Unpen-ji Temple, and even if you don’t stay overnight, most of the walking pilgrims probably know about it. The host is old, but he is full of energy that does not make you feel old at all.

This is an inn at the foot of Unpenji Temple. It is on the way from Iyo Doi and Iyo Mishima to Unpenji via Triangle Temple. After staying overnight here, I will aim for Unpenji the next day. It takes about 2 to 2.5 hours to reach Unpenji. Also, the two rice balls we received at the reception were very delicious!
I arrived at the inn before 15:00, but I was warmly welcomed and immediately took a bath. The garden is lined with bonsai trees, so you can spend a pleasant time there.
At dinner, the owner will tell you how to get to Unpenji Temple. Although it’s a new year, the owner’s cheerful smile is wonderful, and I would like to stay again next time.
Since it is popular as a pilgrim inn from long ago, several pilgrims always stay here.

I had heard that it was a popular inn and that reservations were required early, so I made a reservation early. There were only two of us on the day of our stay, so it might be easier to make a reservation if it’s outside the pilgrimage season.
It’s in a good location if you want to walk to Unpen-ji, and the owner is really nice, so it’s a very good inn.
