An Inn That Gently Supports Pilgrims, Surfers, and Wandering Souls
Since its founding, Minshuku Taniguchi has been a beloved stop for both surfers and walking pilgrims, located just a few minutes’ walk from the main point of Ikumi Beach, where you can hear the soothing sound of the waves. The inn offers practical comforts, including free use of washing machines and complimentary hot showers for overnight guests (normally ¥250 per use). With over 45 years of history, the inn carries a sense of simple warmth and homeliness, creating memorable experiences for travelers—like the thoughtful gesture of preparing rice balls in the morning for pilgrims heading out on their journey. Situated about six minutes by car from Kōnoura Station, the inn combines convenient access with the friendly, family-run hospitality of a local pro-surfer’s grandmother. For travelers who want to pause, breathe in the quiet sea breeze, and feel their inner rhythm alongside the waves, this inn offers the perfect place to reset before taking the next step.

Just a few minutes’ walk from Ikumi Beach, this long-loved inn continues to be popular among surfers and walking pilgrims alike. Many guests describe the experience as “a peaceful retreat where I could enjoy my solo trip” and “like returning to my countryside home.” The hosts—a quiet yet kind father and a cheerful, friendly mother—are especially appreciated for their warm, family-like hospitality. Guests also highlight the thoughtful amenities, such as free washing machines, free hot showers, and a spacious parking area, which make long journeys easier. A particularly memorable touch for many pilgrims is the owner’s habit of preparing onigiri (rice balls) in the morning, leaving guests with a feeling of genuine care. Overall, Minshuku Taniguchi is widely trusted and praised as a simple, warm, and restorative inn where travelers can reset both body and mind.
The inn is located about 36 km before the Hotsumisaki-ji. I think it’s a purveyor to surfers, but pilgrims are also welcome. The food is delicious and filling. The next morning, he made rice balls for me. People who want to stay in the area should definitely choose this inn.
