At an elevation of approximately 540 meters, the shukubō (temple lodging) of Hashikura-ji sits quietly, carrying centuries of history within its wooden beams. Built in the late Edo period, the main temple exudes a profound sense of presence, where even the cool mountain air seems to whisper its timelessness. With only minimal facilities — no Wi-Fi, no laundry — this serene environment invites guests to simply “be,” to breathe deeply and settle into a slower rhythm. The shōjin ryōri (Buddhist vegetarian meals) feature vegetables from nearby fields and offerings prepared by the local community, each dish infused with the gentleness of the land. Reservations are required at least one week in advance. Especially during cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons, the temple offers an atmosphere where your heart naturally softens and aligns with the tranquil surroundings.
